Everytime when you get into a car, what is the first thing you do? Put on a seat belt right? That’s like car safety 101. There are other things like airbags which we don’t really do much with but know are there to protect us and our family. Similarly, over the last couple of years, there has been a new piece of car safety tech that every parent should look for – it’s called AEB.
What is AEB?
AEB is short for Autonomous Emergency Braking. It is one of the recent breakthrough in car safety technology which can get cars to slow down themselves when there is a chance of a potential accident.
How does it work?
It works by keeping an eye out on the traffic and road conditions in front of us and by looking out for any potential accidents. AEB can notify you as a driver of any danger ahead. It’s like any other notification you may see on your phone, for example like a low battery but this time it’s in your car and it’s a lot more serious.
What does having a car with AEB mean for me and for my family?
If you ignore these notifications and don’t do anything, AEB will even brake for you. If that happens, it will brake and slow the car right down which may save you and everyone else in the car or at best dodge the accident.
Apart from safety, are there any other advantages for having AEB?
One of the other advantages of buying a car with AEB is that the car will not only be safer but will also hold it’s value better. When you do decide to sell, it will be a feature that the buyers would want and will be willing to pay more for it. There really isn’t a price you can put on safety.
Do cars with AEB cost more?
A few years ago, cars with AEB did cost much more than those that did not have it. Today on the other hand, many cars come with AEB as standard. You can find the list of cars with standard AEB on How Safe is Your Car AEB List.
AEB can also be added as an option if the car you are after does not have it as standard. This will cost you a bit more.
Not all AEB systems in cars are the same
AEB comes in 3 different sizes:
- High Speed AEB
- Low Speed AEB
- Pedestrian AEB
Cars that have each of those can be found on How Safe is Your Car AEB List.
Cars with AEB
Some of the popular family cars that have AEB include:
- Toyota Camry
- Hyundai Santa Fe
- Mazda CX-9
- Mazda CX-3
- Volkswagen Tiguan
- Hyundai Tucson (Some Models)
- Toyota Rav4 (Some Models as Option)
AEB in a family car is just like having more airbags. It’s there to protect you and your family in case of an accident. Many popular cars now have it as standard or can be added on as an option. Remember, even if you pay for it as an option, it’s there to give you the peace of mind that your family is as safe as they can be on the road.
