3 ways that can save you money while driving your family around.
Going on fun family trips or even just getting the kids from A to B in a family car can get quite expensive. The car companies claim that many of their models are efficient but when put to test by families in the real world, they often are more expensive to run. To help with that, we have put together 3 ways that can save you money while driving your family around.
Don’t overpay for fuel
How many times have we been to the pump to fill up and get the feeling that there is probably a cheaper pump around the corner? You can get a pretty good idea of the prices you may pay at the pump by doing a quick check on the motormouth app. You could save between 4-10 cents a litre. Yes, that’s better than those Coles or Woolworths fuel shopper dockets.
You can access it by going to MotorMouth’s website or by downloading the app on your phone. Just look up and download MotorMouth on your Apple or Android phone.
Avoid drag racing cars at the traffic lights
There are many times when we are in a rush to get from A to B in our family car. This sometimes means that when we get to a set of lights and without even realising, we drag the car next to us. Dragging cars and accelerating off the line does not get us better fuel economy, in-fact it has the opposite effect. The more we rapidly accelerate, the less kilometers we get out of our tank.
It’s always best to gently accelerate and gradually brake (unless of course, it’s an emergency). This will help with getting the best fuel economy out of our family car while saving money at the pump.
Using cruise control
Many family cars we drive come with cruise control. It’s not only there to make our drive comfortable on family road trips but it also helps with saving fuel. The best place to use cruise control is on the freeways or highways at higher speeds. Just set the speed and let the car cruise on its own.
We do advise that you understand and get used to the controls before using it. If you need help with getting started, the car manual (found in the glove box) will have instructions on how to activate and use it. Using cruise control helps with not only saving you fuel but also making those family trips a whole lot more comfortable.
Saving money in your own family car
Anyone who drives their family around can do a little bit to save on fuel by following these 3 simple tips. It might not seem a lot but it all adds up. Remember, it’s better in your pocket than in theirs.
